Full Text:
A man who walked into a church and confessed to shooting his estranged
wife in August 2002 was convicted by a jury Thursday of first-degree
murder with use of a deadly weapon.
Frank Marques faces a minimum sentence of 40 years to life in prison
when he is sentenced Oct. 13 by District Judge Sally Loehrer.
Marques shot his estranged wife, Candace Weckhorst, 35, in an alley
behind the east Las Vegas auto repair shop where Marques worked.
Weckhorst was the mother of two young children.
According to testimony during Marques' trial, the shooting unfolded
after Weckhorst tried to leave Marques because of years of verbal abuse.
Marques shot Weckhorst after she told him she might one day date other
men.
"My blood started pumping ... right there, that's it. I'm taking
her out. I'm going to shoot my wife," Marques told police in a
confession.
About 20 hours after the shooting, Marques attended Mass at Christ the
King Catholic Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, and told a priest
he had killed his wife.
