A man who walked into a Las Vegas church two years ago and confessed to shooting his estranged wife was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.
District Judge Sally Loehrer sentenced Frank Marques to two consecutive life prison terms. The earliest Marques will be eligible for parole is after serving 40 years in prison.
Marques was convicted of murder in the slaying of Candace Weckhorst. Marques shot and killed the 35-year-old mother of two in 2002 and left her body in an alley near Charleston Boulevard and Mohave Road.
Prosecutors had cast Marques as a man who was verbally abusive to his wife, and couldn't accept that she was going to divorce him and might date other men.
The day after Weckhorst's death, Marques walked into Christ the King Catholic Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, and announced during Mass that he had killed his wife and wanted the priest's blessing.
