What are women's shelters, transition houses, and interval houses? In Saskatchewan, they are safe places a woman and her children can go if she has been beaten, abused or has been threatened with violence by her husband or common-law partner. They provide free shelter, food, clothing, transportation, and counseling. They offer a woman a supportive place to stay while she considers her situation, looks at her options and makes her own choices. They provide information on legal aid, social assistance, education, job training, and community resources and referrals. The staff at each shelter will give you all the information you need about their policies, how long you can stay, and other matters. They may also have to tell you there is a waiting list to get into the shelter. Approximately 3,500 women and children a year are taken into Saskatchewan shelters, and 1,500 a year are turned away because the shelters are full.

The YWCA operates a 24-hour emergency shelter for women and children, regardless on circumstance.
Between 1999-2000, over 734 women and more than 625 children
were sheltered at the YWCA. Their reasons for needing YWCA services are as varied
as the women themselves. Typically, the women who utilize our services may be:
· To provide safe, comfortable accommodation for women and a reasonable
rate
· To meet the varying needs of women, girls and mothers with young children
in a wholesome atmosphere.
· To provide support services such as counselling, community information
and referrals
· To provide emergency accommodations for women and children in crisis
